Doctor-administered fat transfer treatment

Fat Transfer

Your own tissue, restoring your own volume.

What is it?

Volume, from a donor area to where it's needed.

Fat transfer uses a small amount of your own fat — gently harvested from a donor area such as the abdomen or thighs, purified, then re-injected — to restore volume in the face or hands. Because it uses your own tissue rather than a synthetic filler, some patients prefer it as a more natural option, though a portion of the transferred fat is typically reabsorbed by the body over the following weeks.

Dr Gerald Tan assesses your donor sites and suitability at consultation before recommending this over other volumising options.

How it works

Harvested, purified, and re-placed.

Fat is gently removed from a donor area using a minor liposuction technique, then purified before being carefully re-injected into the treatment area in fine layers. This is a more involved procedure than a standard filler session, so Dr Tan assesses both the donor site and the treatment area before proceeding.

What it treats

Who this is designed for.

01

Facial volume loss

Cheeks, temples or other areas that have lost natural volume over time.

02

Hand volume loss

Restoring a fuller, less skeletal appearance to ageing hands.

03

A preference for autologous options

Patients who prefer their own tissue over a synthetic filler material.

04

Longer-term volume goals

Once established, transferred fat that survives can offer longer-lasting volume than some fillers.

What to expect

A settling-in period, then a touch-up if needed.

Week 1–2

Swelling and bruising at both the donor and treatment sites, settling gradually over this period.

Week 3–6

Initial swelling resolves; the true, settled result becomes clearer as some of the transferred fat is naturally reabsorbed.

Month 2 onwards

Fat that has established its own blood supply tends to remain long-term; Dr Tan will discuss whether a touch-up session is appropriate.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions.

Is fat transfer safe?
It is a doctor-administered procedure. Dr Tan assesses your suitability, including donor site options, before any treatment is planned.
Does it hurt?
Local anaesthesia is used at both the donor and treatment sites. Most patients find it manageable, with some soreness afterwards similar to minor liposuction.
What is the downtime?
Expect bruising and swelling at both sites for one to two weeks. Dr Tan will advise on activity to avoid during this period.
Will all the transferred fat stay?
No — some reabsorption is expected and normal. The fat that establishes a blood supply tends to remain longer-term, which is why results are usually assessed a few months out.
How many sessions will I need?
Often just one, with a touch-up session considered later if needed. Dr Tan will discuss a plan specific to your goals.
